Traditionally, encaustic tiles were fashioned out of clay of different colors which comprised the design and the body of the tile. Today, most modern versions are made with cement (see Cement Tile) in a mold in which the colors are poured into different sections of the mold to make the pattern and then topped with concrete and hydraulically pressed.
