Graduate Hotel: New Haven

Graduate Hotels first approached Design and Direct Source in 2017 to work on their upcoming Roosevelt Island location. Through meeting their budget and timing requirements the door opened to continue working together on many Graduate Hotel locations, including Graduate New Haven.

Graduate New Haven has become one of the subjects of a new show, Handcrafted Hotels, now streaming as part of Magnolia Network on Discovery+. Former President of Design and Direct Source, Timothy Roberts appears on the show.

The designers were clear on their desire to create a custom pattern based on a classic motif. DDS set off to find the best manufacturer up for the task; they must be able to provide the level of customization, come in on budget, and produce on the scale required for the job. The team considered examples of the executions from several factories.

The pattern included two ranges of blues and eight different tile designs. The designers provided samples with four different saturation levels to tune in the intensity of the line and background color. 32 separate custom tile designs were selected, including a range of colors, patterns, and line detail.

The original design inspiration image influenced the blue and white pallet and floral motif.
